Squealing belt noise from the engine: what it means

Book a check soon

A squealing noise on startup is one of the signs a belt is due for inspection, along with visible cracking, fraying or a glazed surface. It deserves more attention than the noise suggests: the alternator is usually driven by a belt, and a worn or snapped belt can leave you stranded.

Can you keep driving?

Usually yes, but have the belts inspected soon. If the battery warning light also comes on while driving, get it checked promptly, because with the belt gone the charging stops.

What it means

Belts connect and drive various engine systems. The alternator, which powers everything electrical while you drive and recharges the battery, is driven by the engine, usually via a belt, and on most vehicles the water pump is driven by the engine through a belt or a chain.

Belts are judged by condition: the replacement interval varies enormously by engine design, so it is the belt itself that tells you. Cracks, fraying or a glazed surface mean replacement, and a squeal on startup is a sign it is time for an inspection, regardless of the mileage.

Common causes

  • A worn belt, with visible cracking or fraying
  • A belt with a glazed surface
  • The brake pad wear indicator, if the squeal only comes when you brake, which is not a belt at all
  • On a manual car, the clutch release bearing or a dry pedal pivot, if it chirps in the first inch of pedal travel

What to do now

  1. Note when the squeal happens: on startup, only when you brake, or only when you press the clutch pedal.
  2. Look at the belts you can see for cracks, fraying or a glazed surface.
  3. Watch for the battery warning light. If it comes on while driving, have the charging system checked promptly.
  4. If the temperature gauge climbs, follow the overheating steps: AC off, heater on full, pull over and shut the engine off.
  5. Book an inspection and ask for the belts and hoses to be checked. Belt intervals vary enormously by engine, so follow your owner's manual.

Belt, or a different squeal?

  • A squeal on startup, with cracks or fraying on the belt: a worn belt, so have it inspected soon
  • A squeal with the battery warning light on: the charging system, meaning the alternator, its belt or the wiring
  • A consistent high-pitched squeal every time you brake: usually the brake pad wear indicator, not a belt
  • Manual car, a squeak or chirp in the first inch of clutch pedal travel: the release bearing or a dry pedal pivot
  • A high-pitched whining or grinding from the front of the engine: possibly a failing water pump
  • Electric car: there are no engine belts to squeal

What people often get wrong

That a belt can wait for its mileage interval. Visible cracking, fraying or a squeal on startup are signs it is time for inspection regardless of the mileage, and belts are among the items best judged by looking at them rather than waiting for a warning light.

When the car must go to a workshop

Belts, hoses and anything else that is hard to judge yourself are worth letting a technician check at every service. A worn or snapped belt can leave you stranded, and depending on which belt, can also cause engine damage, so have a squealing belt inspected rather than waiting for it to go.
