Is my mechanic overcharging me? Seven tactics to watch for

Good to know

Most overcharging follows a few recognizable patterns: work unrelated to why you brought the car in, a lump sum with no breakdown, pressure to approve extra work immediately, no written estimate, and a diagnostic fee nobody mentioned. None of these needs technical knowledge to spot.

Do you have to approve it now?

No. Being pushed to approve extra work over the phone, without seeing the actual issue, is one of the tactics. Ask to see the failed part, many shops will keep it for you, or ask for photos before you approve anything.

What overcharging looks like

A bill grows past what it should be in a few recognizable ways. A gap between two quotes for the same job is not proof of overcharging on its own. It is a question about which line differs: the parts, the labor or the diagnosis.

A single figure with no breakdown is the one to question, whatever the total says.

The tactics to watch for

  • Unrelated "recommended" work: preventive replacements that have nothing to do with why you brought the car in
  • A vague estimate: a single lump sum with no breakdown of parts versus labor
  • Pressure to approve extra work immediately, over the phone, without seeing the actual issue
  • No written estimate before work starts
  • A diagnostic fee on the final bill that was never mentioned upfront
  • Diesel: a new particulate filter, with nobody able to explain why it blocked
  • Electric: an estimate that jumps straight to the whole battery pack, without describing the fault that was found

How to protect yourself

  1. Ask how each recommended item relates to your original complaint before approving it.
  2. Ask for an itemized, written estimate before authorizing any work.
  3. Ask to see the failed part, or photos of it, before you approve anything.
  4. Ask about diagnostic charges before authorizing any inspection.
  5. On a diesel, ask which rung of the filter ladder the shop is proposing, why the one below won't do, and whether the code is soot or ash.
  6. On an electric car, ask which fault was found and whether it can be repaired at module level. Then check the battery warranty.

Whole packs are rarely replaced. Ask which fault was found, and whether it can be repaired at module level.

Diesel and electric: what to ask

  • A new particulate filter is quoted: ask what blocked it, usually a leaking injector, a turbo passing oil, a sticking EGR valve or short trips.
  • The whole battery pack is quoted: whole packs are rarely replaced, and most faults sit in one module, a cooling circuit or the control electronics.
  • An AdBlue fault: ask whether it's the fluid or the dosing system before you approve anything.
  • Glow plug replacement: ask upfront about the risk of a seized plug breaking during removal.

What people often get wrong

Treating a gap between two quotes as proof of overcharging. It is a question: ask which line differs, the parts, the labor or the diagnosis.

When to walk away or get a second opinion

One red flag is a question. Several are a reason to walk. If a shop can't explain what caused a failure, or what was done to rule out the usual causes, that's a good moment to get a second opinion. A reputable shop won't discourage one.
