What the warning actually means
It usually appears as a spanner, a car on a lift, or the word SERVICE. It counts down. It measures nothing.
How the reminder works
Many newer cars calculate the interval instead of counting straight up. The car measures cold starts, trip length, engine speed and oil temperature, and a run of short cold trips can move the service several thousand miles closer than the handbook suggests.
