P0A80: traction battery degraded past the manufacturer's threshold

Book a check soon

P0A80 means the traction battery has degraded past the manufacturer's threshold. It is ageing that has been going on for a long time, not a sudden fault, so have it checked soon and get the state of health read before you decide anything.

Can you keep driving?

Usually yes, but book it in soon. The code is about capacity, not a sign that the car is about to stop.

What the code actually means

Every rechargeable lithium-ion cell loses some capacity with time and use. That is chemistry, not a defect, and under normal conditions it is gradual. Once the pack has fallen past the limit the manufacturer set, P0A80 is stored. The code is the end of a long process, not the start of one. A generic reader usually decodes it by name.

How the battery management system watches the pack

The battery management system watches the voltage and the temperature of the cells. It balances around the weakest of them, and it is what stores P0A80 once the pack has passed the limit the manufacturer set.

Common causes

  • Calendar ageing, driven by time, temperature and how full the pack is kept
  • Cycle ageing from use, where deep cycles, high currents and extreme temperatures cost the most
  • A hot pack held at a high state of charge for long periods, which ages fastest
  • Cells ageing at different rates, with the battery management system balancing around the weakest

What to do now

  1. Write the code down before anyone clears it. Clearing P0A80 repairs nothing.
  2. Have the state of health read. It is a live data value, not a code, and it tells you far more than the code alone.
  3. Compare range like for like across a mild season. A winter range drop is not degradation.
  4. Get out the warranty booklet. Traction battery warranties carry a capacity retention threshold, and the terms vary by market and model.
  5. Looking at a used EV with this code stored? Ask for a dealer or specialist state of health report before you buy.

What people often get wrong

Thinking P0A80 can be cleared away. It did not appear overnight, and clearing it repairs nothing. Clearing also erases the freeze frame data that helps a technician, and the code will usually come back.

When the car must go to a workshop

Have it checked soon by the dealer or an EV specialist who can read cell group data. High voltage work is not owner serviceable, and whether the warranty applies is decided by the booklet for your car.
