Direct injection carbon buildup: symptoms and what to ask for
Some direct injection engines build deposits on the back of the intake valves, because fuel no longer washes them. The source is oil vapor and, on some engines, recirculated exhaust. Diagnosis is a borescope inspection, not a mileage.
Can you keep driving?
Yes. Intake valve deposits build up gradually and are not an emergency. The symptoms have several possible causes, so have it diagnosed rather than assumed.
What it means
On a port injected engine, fuel sprays across the back of the intake valves and keeps them washed. On a direct injection engine, fuel sprays straight into the cylinder, so nothing washes the valves.
Oil vapor from the crankcase ventilation and, on some engines, recirculated exhaust can bake onto a hot valve there. How much builds up varies enormously with engine design, oil consumption and how the car is driven. Engines with both port and direct injection keep their valves washed.
Common causes
- A rough idle when the engine is cold
- Misfire codes at a cold start that clear once the engine is warm
- Hesitation
- A gradual loss of power and fuel economy
What to do now
- Have the other causes ruled out first, because every one of these symptoms has several.
- Ask for a borescope inspection through the intake port before any cleaning.
- If cleaning is recommended on mileage alone, ask what was inspected.
- Buying used and worried about deposits: look for an engine with both port and direct injection.

Deposits, or something else?
- A rough cold idle on a direct injection engine: possibly intake valve deposits, or several other things, so inspect first.
- A misfire on one cylinder, worst cold or at idle: also a restricted injector, a coil or a plug.
- An engine with both port and direct injection: the port injectors keep the valves washed.
What people often get wrong
That a fuel additive in the tank will clean the valves. On a direct injection engine the fuel never touches the back of the intake valves, so nothing in the tank passes that way.
When the car must go to a workshop
When cleaning is warranted, it is done mechanically or by media blasting with the intake manifold removed, following the manufacturer's procedure. Diagnosis comes first: an inspection, not a mileage.
