Battery or alternator: how to tell which one is failing
A weak battery and a failing alternator can produce similar symptoms, a slow crank or a dead car, which is why a shop tests both rather than guessing. The battery-shaped warning light usually points to the charging system.
Can you keep driving?
If the battery light comes on while driving, get it checked promptly. The car can keep running on battery power for a while, but the battery drains with nothing recharging it, and the car will eventually stall or fail to restart.
What it means
The battery stores energy and delivers the large burst of current needed to crank the engine. The alternator, driven by the engine usually via a belt, takes over once the engine runs, powering everything electrical and recharging the battery for the next start.
People blame the battery for almost everything electrical, but sometimes it's just the part that gave out first because something else wasn't charging it properly.

Common causes
- Slow crank when starting: the battery, the starter or a connection
- The battery warning light on while driving: usually the charging system
- Dim or flickering headlights at idle: a charging or connection issue
- A battery that repeatedly needs jump-starting: the battery or the charging system
- Corroded or loose battery terminals, which feel exactly like a dead battery
What to do now
- Note the symptom: slow crank, a click, dim lights at idle, or the battery light while driving.
- Check the battery terminals for a white or bluish crust and a loose clamp before assuming the battery has failed.
- If the battery light comes on while driving, limit electrical use and head to safety promptly.
- Don't rely on repeated jump-starts. A jump-start gets you moving, but it doesn't diagnose anything.
- Have the battery and the charging system tested, so you know which one it is.

Battery or alternator?
- Struggles on the first cold morning: often a battery already on its way out. Cold reveals the weakness.
- Battery light comes on while driving: usually the charging system, meaning the alternator, its belt or the wiring.
- Dim headlights at idle that brighten when you rev: a classic charging system tell.
- A click and no crank: the battery, the starter or a bad connection. A shop can test which.

What people get wrong
Replacing a perfectly good battery when the real problem was a worn alternator belt. The battery-shaped light comes on for the charging system, not just the battery.

When it has to go to a workshop
Alternator testing and replacement is shop work. Checking and cleaning corroded battery terminals is something you can do yourself.
